Spring on Long Island is a great time for a quick “insurance tune-up.” A few small checks now can help prevent common claims—and make sure your coverage matches your home today.

1) Update your home inventory:

Walk through your home and take quick photos of each room. Save them in a cloud folder along with receipts for big-ticket items. If you ever need to file a claim, this makes things much easier.

2) Make sure renovations are reflected:

If you’ve updated a kitchen, bathroom, roof, windows, or finished a basement, your dwelling limit may need adjusting to reflect current rebuild costs.

3) Check gutters, downspouts, and roof edges:

Overflowing gutters and small roof issues can lead to major water damage. Clean debris, confirm downspouts push water away from the home, and look for any obvious shingle or flashing concerns.

4) Ask about “water backup” coverage:

Many homeowners are surprised to learn sewer or drain backup coverage may be optional. If you have a basement or below-grade space, it’s worth checking what your policy includes and what the limit is.

5) Revisit deductibles and discounts:

Confirm your deductible is an amount you’d feel comfortable paying if something happened tomorrow. Also ask about discounts—bundling, alarms, updated roof/electrical, and claim-free options can all help.
